Harvest 09: Finishing WB near Hull

Harvest is about a week later than normal at John Porter’s farm near West Newton, Hull, but he hopes to finish winter barley today (3 August).

Mr Porter was combining the final 16ha (40 acres) of Pelican at The Grange, and hoped to get into the oilseed rape this afternoon.

Barley yields had been pleasing, although the rain had knocked some crops down, he said.

The Pelican had averaged 9-10t/ha (3.6-4t/acre), while a trial plot of Volume had excelled at 11.4t/ha (4.6t/acre).

Other 2.5ha (1-acre) trials of Sequel, Pelican and Suzuka yielded 10.5t/ha (4.3t/acre), 10.1t/ha (4.1t/acre), and 9.2t/ha (3.7t/acre), respectively.

Vining peas had also yielded better than average, at 6-7t/ha (2.4-2.8t/acre).

Having cut the headlands of 138ha (340 acres) of Bravour, Ovation, Lioness and Vision, the oilseed rape looked promising, said Mr Porter.

Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Pelican
Area: 28ha (70 acres)
Yield: 9-10t/ha (3.6-4t/acre)
