Harvest 09: Hopeful in Co.Down
Raymond Wilson hoped to be combining this afternoon (30 July) after yesterday’s heavy rain caused delays.
So far he had cut 20ha (50 acres) of Volume winter barley and the same of Camion at Tullynacrew Farm, Portaferry, Co.Down.
Both had performed well, with the Camion averaging 7.4-8.7t/ha (3-3.5t/acre) at 68-70kg/hl, and the Volume yielding 9.9t/ha (4t/acre) at 62-65kg/hl.
“We were very well pleased with that,” said Mr Wilson.
He now had 12ha (30 acres) of Retriever and 60ha (150 acres) of Saffron to cut, both of which were ready now.
That would be followed by 53ha (130 acres) of winter wheat and 60ha (150 acres) of spring barley. “It will probably all come together.”
With not much winter barley or oilseed rape in the area, harvest was probably only about 5% complete, he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
