Harvest 09: Just linseed left in Stowmarket
James Forrest has just got linseed left to combine at RH Forrest & Co, near Stowmarket, Suffolk.
“We finished the Fuego spring beans on Saturday (22 August). They were a little disappointing this year due to the lack of moisture in the spring.”
Yields across 100ha (250 acres) were 20-30% down on last year, he said.
The winter wheat could have been finished on 16 August, but Mr Forrest left 32ha (80 acres) for a Claas combine demonstration.
The Viscount, Duxford, Oakley, Glasgow and Diego did better than expected, considering the dry spring – and yields ended up about average, he said.
Astrid, D03 and Epure oilseed rape yields were above average, with Astrid proving the best, while the semi-dwarf variety D03 was very easy to combine.
Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
