Harvest 09: Little cut in Devon

Farmers in Devon have made very little progress into harvest, with just a few fields of oilseed rape and winter barley cut so far.

Duncan Lyon, store manager at Devon Grain, said it was still very early for much to have been combined.

“Some winter barley has been done and the quality has not been too bad, at 66-68kg/hl.”

However, most crops were still green in the tramlines and needed a few days of sun, said Mr Lyon.

The rape that had been sprayed off was now fit and some combines would be rolling today (28 July).

Although most crops were standing and looking well, some did suffer in last week’s heavy rain and wind, he added.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
