Harvest 09: On hold in Inverness

Jim Whiteford has only managed to cut 11ha (26 acres) of spring barley due to a spate of wet weather at Shandwick Mains, Tain, Inverness.

“There’s not much to report here due to the weather turning English – can we please have our sun back?”

The Optic spring barley had been ready since Monday (17 August), he said.

Yields and quality had been excellent so far, at 7.7t/ha (3.1t/acre) and 1.38% nitrogen. Screenings were low, at 1.9%, and specific weight was good at 64.3kg/hl.

“But we are in desperate need of good weather to get on with the job.”

With showers all day yesterday (20 August), he was busy ploughing ready for winter wheat, and said the Cuillin oilseed rape, drilled last week, was coming through the ground nicely.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
