Harvest 09: Osprey proves pleasing

Harvest is only about 7% through near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, according to Gary Mills from PLW Mills, Eye.

So far he had cut 16ha (40 acres) of Osprey oilseed rape for seed, and 12ha (30 acres) of a neighbour’s Castille, both of which had done better than expected.

“Considering when the Osprey was drilled (third week in September), and not in the best conditions, it’s done pretty well.”

The Osprey averaged 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre), and up to 4.9t/ha (2t/acre) in places, while the Castille came in at 4.3t/ha (1.75t/acre).

Oil content in the Osprey was extremely high at 47.4%.

Although Mr Mills had been combining today (29 July), an afternoon shower had stopped play, leaving 8ha (20 acres) of Castille and 16ha (40 acres) of Carat winter barley to cut.

“After that we shall be into the peas – which of all the crops I’ve got look very well – and wheat, which is fairly variable.”
