Harvest 09: WB almost finished in Cambs

Winter barley harvest in Cambridgeshire is almost finished, with just 15% left to cut according to Camgrain’s Philip Darke.

“It has yielded well and overall the quality has been fine.”

Farmers had combined about half of their winter rapeseed, and yields had been excellent where crops had established well, he added.

Spring barley was also underway, with about 10% now cut, and quality looking promising.

“But the wheat is ready and there’s loads of rape still out in the fields,” said Mr Darke.

“It’s getting in the way of combines wanting to get into the wheat – it is frustrating – farmers just want to get on.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
