Harvest 09: Wheat not fit in Devon

Farmers in the West Country are nearing the end of their winter barley and oilseed rape harvest, but wheat is not yet ripe.

Duncan Lyon, store manager at Devon Grain, said harvest was about 15% complete in the area, with most oat crops now cut, too.

Winter barley and oilseed rape quality had been good, with bushelweights of 66kg/hl, and high oil contents, respectively.

“For some farmers there will now be a bit of a gap. On the whole the remaining crops look alright, although there are one or two concerns,” he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
