Harvest 09: Yields down in Yorks

Wheat harvest is almost complete near Brandsby, Yorkshire, leaving Keith Snowball just beans left to cut.

“On the whole, yields are below average,” he said. “Over the past week people have really romped through harvest – partly because the yields haven’t been there.”

Solstice winter wheat had averaged just 7.4t/ha (3t/acre) at High Farm, and protein was a bit low at 12.3%.

“We’ve managed to secure a milling wheat premium on the whole, but the annoying thing is that millers are knocked £2 per point off, which soon brings the price down.”

Spring barley had not yielded well either, at about 5.6t/ha (2.25t/acre).

Palladium spring rape, cut yesterday (13 September), came in at 2.5t/ha (1t/acre) and 7.5% moisture.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
