Harvest going well despite weather
Scottish farmer James McOuat has finished harvesting his winter barley and oilseed rape with great success despite the “soggy weather”.
His Pearl winter barley did well at 8.64 t/ha (3.5 t/acre) with a good crop of straw.
“My dad has a complaint for nearly everything, but when he saw this he just smiled.”
The straw will be very helpful to the animal side of the farm. “It helps us a lot.”
Caracas oilseed rape harvest “was the best we’ve ever seen”.
“We were lucky we had just enough moisture in the ground for it to germinate – I didn’t think it was fantastic but when we put the combine in it was a great surprise.”
Mr McOuat said many of his neighbours have swathed their oilseed rape, but because of the wet weather it’s starting to go black.
“We were lucky that we brought it all in before the rain came – the amount of rain we’ve had is frightening.”
