Harvest Highlights – Cracking along in Northern Ireland
Despite heavy rain last week, James Wray, Farmers Weekly’s N Ireland Barometer farmer, was well into combining his 28ha (70 acres) of Pearl winter barley this morning.
“We’ve had fantastic weather over the weekend,” he said. “We started yesterday and have done about 12 acres. I reckon the first field did about 3.4t/acre.
“That’s not too bad, but I reckon it would have been higher if we hadn’t had such a wet winter.”
The farm’s Opico batch drier should easily cope with the 18% moisture sample, he added.
“The problem will be getting the straw baled. The ground is so wet.”
Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Pearl
Yield: 8.5t/ha (3.4t/acre)
Moisture content: 18%
