Harvest Highlights – Ground conditions causing some problems in North Yorks

Catherine Thompson of Holme on Spalding Moor, York had finished the majority of 30.8ha (77 acres) Castille oilseed rape and was getting ready to start on 12-16ha (30-40 acres) of Saffron winter barley.

Despite being unable to finish the last couple of hectares (4-5 acres) of rape on wet light land, Mrs Thompson was pleased how most of it had come off.

She expected to receive wider wheels tomorrow [1 August] which would enable her combine heavy land Saffron which was ripe and ready, although the ground was still very wet.

However, she was worried about soil conditions and any damage that could occur when either harvesting or baling barley straw.

She expected 140ha (350 acres) of Brompton, Gladiator and Alchemy to ripen in around seven days.

Despite the wet months Mrs Thompson remained hopeful for a drier August. “As long as the weather is clear from now on little will be lost.”
