Harvest kicks off in Derbyshire

Harvest kicked off at Netherseal in Derbyshire yesterday.

About 12 acres of Carat winter barley was cut at 14.3% moisture content at M Adey’s farm – the first grain came off about a week earlier than last year. The moment was captured by 17-year-old National Diploma in Agriculture student and keen photographer Ross Freeman.

At Berkyn Manor Farm, Horton, in Berkshire, Sequel winter barley destined for the feed market was harvested on Saturday (3 July).

Colin Rayner of J Rayner & Sons says it yielded 8 tonnes/ha at 15% moisture and the driver, Andrez Milewski, was in a Class Lexion 570t with a 30ft header. The straw was due to be sold to a local dairy farm.

Farmers Weekly and our website, FWi, will once again this year be bringing you the very latest harvest news all through the summer, via Harvest Highlights.

This will feature rolling news, updates on yields and quality, plus a showcase for your pictures and video. It’ll be a comprehensive round-up of the harvest as it unfolds across Britain – the wet, the dry, the bumper and the disappointing.

Our Harvest Highlights picture gallery has just opened for business so as and when your combine starts to roll – or indeed if you spot someone else cutting – then add photos to it.
