Wheat summary
Results have been published from 16 of the 31 fungicide-treated sites with the average yield of control varieties standing at 11.08 t/ha, 0.13 t/ha below the five-year average of 11.21 t/ha. However, fifteen trials are yet to report, including a number in badly drought affected areas, so it seems likely that the average will slip.
Wheat variety selection
The highest-yielding variety is Redwald on 107%. Newly recommended Group 3 variety Solitaire is on 105%, alongside Bamford, with newly recommended Group 3 variety Flute on 104%. Group 3s now look very attractive compared with a few years ago, offering feed wheat yields and the possibility of a milling premium.
Also on 104% come the hard Group 4 varieties: newly recommended Scope, Beowulf, Dawsum and soft Group 4 Skyscraper, the later having a very good year in the general absence of septoria. All the other hard group 4s are underperforming so far in 2025, with Champion and Insitor on 103%, Graham and Gleam on 101% and Typhoon on 98%
The remaining soft group 4s are generally at or about their five-yrear averages so far, with Zealum on 103%, newly recommended Hexton on 102% and Bairstow and Blackstone on 101%.
The Group 1 bread wheat varieties are at or close to their five-year averages, with Zyatt highest yielding on 100%, newly recommended variety Vibe, on 97%, the same as Cheer, with Skyfall and Crusoe on 96% and Illustrious on 93%.
There were a slew of new Group 2 varieties recommended last year and they are having mixed fortunes in 2025. Newbie is highest yielding on 103%, with Shergar and Arnie both on 102%, alongside established Group 2 Ultimatum.
Arnie is 2% below its five-year average, as is Equipe, on 100%, but the reason is unclear and they may recover as more trials report. The established Groups 2s Extase, (101%) Mayflower (99%) Palladium (99%) are also close to their five-year average as is newly recommended Goldfinch on 89%. Though lower yielding, Goldfinch is resistant to BYDV offering alternative management options.
With just half of fungicide-treated trials having reported yet it’s too early to draw any firm conclusions about variety performance in 2025. Rankings are likely to change as more trials are reported.
