Heavy rain and flat oats in Hertfordshire

Harvest progress was well behind normal at Blackbirds Farm, Aldenham, Hertfordshire, where Alistair Pinkerton still had a third of the combining left to do. “We would normally be finished by now.”

The 32ha (80 acres) of Castille oilseed rape yielded well below expectation, but the 93ha (230 acres) of milling wheat Xi19 came in above average, said Mr Pinkerton. He still had 49ha (120 acres) of Xi 19 to combine, as well as 40ha (100 acres) of Gerald winter oats and some feed wheat for a neighbour.

“The wheat is all standing up but the oats are very flat which will make them difficult to combine. We won’t be on for a day or so as the wheat was 26% yesterday and it’s been raining heavily today.”
