Hereward cut in Oxfordshire

Philip Chamberlain was cutting Hereward winter wheat over the weekend (16 August) at Crowmarsh Battle Farm, Wallingford, Oxon.

“We walked away from the oats to try to get the milling wheat,” he said. Having cut 60ha (148 acres) yields had varied from 7.5-9t/ha (3-3.6t/acre).

“We’re very happy with that,” he said. Sample results on both protein and Hagberg were also fine.

The 40ha (100 acres) of Gerald winter oats had averaged about 7t/ha (2.8t/acre), but half of the remaining 70ha (173 acres) had gone flat.

Mr Chamberlain had also finished his Tipple spring barley, which averaged over 7t/ha (2.8t/acre), and finally completed the oilseed rape.

A mixture of varieties, the rape proved very variable, with good fields yielding up to 3.9t/ha (1.6t/acre) and the poor fields, which suffered from pigeon damage, only managing 2.5-2.8t/ha (1-1.1t/acre).

Mr Chamberlain now had the remaining oats and 670ha (1655 acres) of Hereward, Xi19, Einstein and Alchemy wheat to cut.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
