Ideal weather in Essex
Wheat harvest is progressing well in ideal weather for Essex farmer and contractor Phillip Ramsey near Finchingfield.
Around 100ha (250 acres) of Malacca and Cordiale has been cut so far and quality has been generally good, with yields near normal, he said.
“The dry spell in June means we’re not getting massively high yields, but they should be about average.”
One field of Cordiale on the family farm yielded 8.4t/ha (3.4t/acre) at 12.95% protein, 307 Hagberg and 77kg/hl bushel weight.
“While yields are nothing more than average, the better quality and no drying costs mean it is going much better than last year.”
