He was about 80% through his Sequel winter barley, with 36ha (90 acres) left to cut. It was coming in at 17-20% moisture and yielding better than average at 9-10t/ha (3.6-4t/acre).

The 144ha (355 acres) of oilseed rape had been dessicated for three weeks, and Mr Hutcheson hoped to get into that straight after the winter barley. “The rape looks very mixed and the weather may affect it if it continues for too much longer.”

However, the 485ha (1200 acres) of wheat looked well. That would be followed by Optic spring barley, Firth spring oats and Fuego spring beans.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
