Kelso harvest half done as drizzle returns
Harvest was about half way through for Stuart Fuller-Shapcott at Sweethope, near Kelso. “We’ve had a reasonable week at last but it’s just started drizzling,” he said.
With 81ha (200 acres) of Alchemy, Einstein and Solstice still standing, he hoped to make a start on the wheat over the next day or so.
Mr Fuller-Shapcott also had 8ha (20 acres) of Optic spring barley to cut, with the earlier-cut Optic and Oxbridge yielding 5.7-5.9t/ha (2.3-2.4t/acre) at nitrogen contents down to 1.38%.
The oilseed rape was all in the barn, having averaged a pleasing 4.2-4.7t/ha (1.7-1.9t/acre). And next year’s rape was all but planted, said Mr Fuller-Shapcott. “I’m now going to fight the slugs on every single front I can.”
