Looking after Quench spring barley in Hampshire

Jonathon Arnold of Barley-Robin Appel, Hampshire hoped to combine 20ha (50acres) of Quench spring barley this afternoon. With 60ha (150 acres) left to cut, he expected to finish it within the next few days.

It had done “very well” so far and Mr Arnold hoped for yields above 7.5t/ha (3 t/acre). Screenings had been below 2% and Nitrogen was at 1.55%

Crops were being cut at 15% moisture, and he said it would be fit for malting;

Specific weight was around 66kg/hl.

“It’s gone very well, despite a few stops and starts, but you’ve always got to remain optimistic,” he ended.
