Mists put harvest on hold in Cornwall

Sea mists have put harvest on hold at Tregirls Farm, Padstow, Cornwall, but Charlie Watson-Smyth has at least made a start on winter barley.

“We started combining a little bit of winter barley yesterday (13 July),” he said. “It seems to be very good so far – it’s yielded a good 7.4t/ha, which is decent for us.”

Crop facts

  • Crop: Winter barley
  • Variety: Cassia
  • Area: 4ha
  • Yield: 7.4t/ha

With the drier broken down, and damp mists blowing in, harvest was unlikely to be underway again immediately, added Mr Watson-Smyth.

“There hasn’t been much cut around here – and we’ve only done about 4ha. It’s probably the best field we’ve got, but the rest of is looks alright, too.”

With about 80ha of winter barley to cut, Mr Watson-Smyth would then have a gap before moving into spring barley.

“That is looking good at the moment, too – so fingers crossed.”
