Mixed progress in Yorkshire
“A lot of the smaller farms have finished, while the larger farms have got the finish line in sight.”
But, some farmers hit by exceptional amounts of rain, are still struggling to get into the field.
The good weather has come at a critical time, albeit too late for many, as quality in the wheat is hard to find, he added.
“Quality has completely gone. Hagbergs are lost and now bushel weights are starting to go.”
“It‘s been more of a salvage operation than a harvest this year.”
According to Mr Britland, 70% of the wheat has now been harvested, and if the weather stays fine, most will be finished by the end of the week (w/e Sept 3).
“If the weather stays as promised then by Sunday the majority of farmers will have finished.”
Beans have stood up well, but there have been some instances of shedding he said.
The rape earlier this year went badly with much of it sprouting.
