More wheat info needed
WHEAT GROWERS should have access to clearer information on the speed different varieties develop at, to help when planning sowing operations, HGCA conference delegates (Dec 7) have been told.
While it may be a relatively simplistic factor to look at, a better understanding can help growers make more informed decisions about which varieties are best suited to early or late sowing, said independent consultant, Richard Fenwick.
The Home-Grown Cereals Authority has been collecting data on the speed different varieties develop at over the past two years, said Recommended Lists manager, Jim McVittie.
More reference will be given to speed of development in the ‘variety comments‘ section of the Recommended Lists, he said, but ruled out any separate column within the lists.
Much of that information is available directly from the breeders themselves, he noted.
