Nitrogen hists Xi19 price
Still smiling in Sussex despite the disappointment of low protein, perhaps due to too little nitrogen fertiliser. Peter (left) and Geoffrey Batchelor”s first-time Xi19 wheat, targeted at bread making, yielded well at Oakhurst Farm, Billingshurst. Hagberg was also satisfactory, as in their Hereward and Solstice. But with a protein of only 10.7-10.9% it made 10/t less than originally hoped when sent as part of a total of 550t to Southampton Mills for blending. “I should think that with a yield of 3.5t/acre, we had some protein dilution,” says Peter. “We shall probably have to look at our nitrogen use more seriously.” The farm has had mixed results from late foliar N treatments, he notes.
