Oats harvest follows early wheat in Hertfordshire

James Coumbe has been combining Gerald oats at Sentry Farms, Sentry-Hertfordshire, Hatfield, Herts.

Work on his 66ha (165 acres) began yesterday and he completed 20ha (50 acres) of the crop between 11.5-13.5%. Although it looked a little dry, Mr Coumbe said the crop looked reasonable. To prevent further drying he wanted to get the rest in quickly.

Mr Coumbe finished Soissons winter wheat winter wheat early on Monday.
It had good Hagbergs, just under 300, and 12.5-14% protein. Mr Coumbe estimated yield around 7.5t/ha (3 t/acre).

A total 160ha (400 acres) Es Astrid oilseed rape “escaped the showers” and yielded 2.5t/ha (1 t/acre).

Hoping to finish mid-August, Mr Coumbe said: “The settled weather is allowing us to get on and it’s nice to see good prices so we can make good money again.”
