Mr Stratton used four different varieties: Winner, Fortis, Recital and Expert. He said he saw very little variation in any of the varieties.

The crop came in with 3.3 t/ha (1.34 t/acre) yield which is down on the five year average of 3.7 t/ha (1.5 t/acre).

He said: “It wasn’t easy to combine.”

This was mainly due to the crop being laid after the heavy storms that the area has received in recent weeks.

However Mr Stratton had no problems with establishment because the farm lies on chalk, which retains moisture in the ground well.
