Paul enjoys good yields in Shrops
Paul Bird finished combining his wheat on Saturday (30 August) at Flashbrook Grange, Newport, Shrops.
“It was better than average – I think everything has done better than normal,” he said.
He had 200ha (500 acres) of Alchemy, Oakley, Humber, Solstice and Gladiator, with Oakley and Humber performing the best.
The Solstice had tested reasonably well, with good Hagberg but low protein. Although nothing else had been tested, it looked good, with very little sprouting, he said.
Everything had had to be dried, with the lowest moisture coming in at 16%, and the highest at 22%.
“We’re trying to get some rape into the ground now as the beans are not ready to cut yet. But we’ve got a lot of muckspreading to do first.”
