PGRO announces provisional results of pea crop trials

Pea yields have averaged just under 5t/ha in the provisional PGRO Recommended List trial results.

While individual trials have shown low variability this year, there is variability in the performance of varieties between sites, said PGRO senior technical officer Stephen Belcher.

Based on the results, two white-seeded peas, Gregor and Respect, could gain a full recommendation for 2011, he said.

Gregor has performed well (at 100%), just behind the top-yielding white pea Mascara (101%), while Respect is a little lower yielding at 94%.

Franklin and Salamanca have also performed well (both 99%), and both could gain provisional recommendation for 2011.

There are no new varieties in the large blue category, but Crackerjack has consolidated its position as the highest yielding large blue with 102%.

Prophet (99%) has had a better year and is a little lower yielding than Crackerjack. Bluestar and Daytona have given similar yields to Prophet, and Madras (96%) is a little further behind.

Results from recommended marrowfats, Sakura, Genki, Falstaff and Kahuna, are in line with previous years.

Two new varieties, Neon and Santiago, could gain provisional recommendations for 2011. Neon (90%) has outyielded top-yielding Sakura (87%), and Santiago (82%) is a little lower yielding.

Finally, maple pea Mantara has higher yields than Rose and grain appears to be a little smaller and more round.
