Pleasantly surprised at Priors

Yields are proving surprisingly reasonable at Priors Farm, Peasemore, Berkshire, where George and Richard Brown have cut peas, oilseed rape and wheat.
Prophet peas averaged 4.2t/ha (1.7t/acre), while Dimension oilseed rape came in dry at 3.9t/ha (1.57t/acre).
“We were quite pleased with the peas – and the oilseed rape was about average for here,” said George.
After being rained off yesterday (4 August), they were now into Viscount winter wheat. “It seems to be running quite well at about 9.3t/ha (3.75t/acre).
“That is above our long-term average, but below the past couple of years, when we’ve had over 9.9t/ha (4t/acre).”
The father and son pair now had 59ha (145 acres) of Viscount wheat and 67ha (165 acres) of Tipple spring barley to cut at home, as well as contract combining on nearby farms.
“I didn’t think the wheat looked particularly special, but it’s done quite well, so we should get 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) off the Tipple.”
