Preparing for harvest near Wardley

Geoff Alderslade is yet to start harvest at West Fellgate Farm, Wardley, Tyne & Wear, and very little has been cut in the area so far.

“I’ve seen a little bit of barley cut, but that was for crimping,” he said.

“We sprayed our barley off a week ago, so all being well with the weather we should start combining next week.”

Both the Cassia and Element winter barley looked well, but Mr Alderslade was reserving judgement until the crops were in the barn.

“Fingers crossed – the crops look a lot better than they have done for the past two years.”

However, Mr Alderslade had treated his oilseed rape with podstick. “Some of the more forward crops are starting to turn but the rest isn’t yet ready to spray off.”
