Prices make up for disappointing spring barley yields
Combines had not been rolling on Derek Lamplough’s Manor Farm for five days, but, “we may have a go today,” he said
Mr Lamplough had cut 20ha (50 acres) of his Tipple spring barley and was eager to finish the remaining 37ha.
He hoped for better yields than crops cut so far, which came in at 6.25t/ha (2.5 t/acre), 1.6% nitrogen and 16.5% moisture.
He said, “The yield is down, but I’m not too disappointed, prices will make up.”
Also completed were 14ha (34 acres) of Zebedee winter wheat, yielding 9.4-10 t/ha (3.75-4 t/acre) at 17% moisture. The yield was 1.25 t/ha (0.5 t/acre) down from usual, but it would make biscuit quality, he said.
“The forecast is not good for the weekend, but we can’t alter that; however it would be nice for some dry weather with further crops still to come,” he finished.
