Spraying is a highly skilled job starting from safely filling the sprayer through to applying the spray mix and safely disposing of the empty containers. On top of this, there is the constant scrutiny from the public, politicians, environmentalists and the like on using plant protection products.
Some actives are under the spotlight while others, such as isoproturon (IPU), have been lost, highlighting the importance of following best practice. For many operators, it is second nature, and some go beyond what is required. Now in its 30th year, the Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year Award, organised by Syngenta and Farmers Weekly, aims to recognise this professional approach and help encourage further improvements.
It’s not about having the latest kit. If you can demonstrate ingenuity and an ability to meet these varying objectives by using agrochemicals sensibly, then you’re in with a chance of winning – just like last year’s winner, James Stafford from Wiltshire (pictured above).
The first 50 correct entries will receive a free ticket to Cereals 2013, incorporating Sprays and Sprayers, on 12-13 June. Judges will also select eight regional finalists, who each receive an expenses-paid trip for two to Cereals in Lincolnshire.
For the overall winner, the top prize is an expenses-paid study tour to Denmark, plus the coveted Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year trophy.
