Racing to complete winter wheat in Lincolnshire
Edward Whitfield of Gibbs Farm, near Spalding began combining at 8:00am this morning as he was worried about forecast rain tomorrow. “We’ll combine until it won’t go”, he said.
Mr Whitfield had 70ha (175 acres) of Welford and Cordiale to cut before the rain arrived.
So far 340ha (850 acres) of -Welford, Cordiale, Hereward, Access, Alchemy and Solstice– winter wheat were cut.
He also finished 160ha (400 acres) of ES Astrid, Castille and Lioness oilseed rape a fortnight ago. Crops came in at 6.5-9% moisture and yielded 4 t/ha (32cwt/acre).
Mr Whitfield intended to begin 100ha of Fuego spring beans within the next 2-3 weeks, as they were still green.
