Rain halts progress again in Herefordshire

Ian Sparey was waiting for the weather to improve and was busy with jobs other than harvesting today at Tryfan Barn, Clifton on Teme, Worcester.

He had 50 tonnes from 20ha (50 acres) of Winner oilseed rape collected yesterday. He cut it at 6.5%- 13.5% moisture and said crops yielded about 2.5t/ha (1 t/acre).

He thought 35% had been lost due to hail storms and Friday’s rain [20 July].

Mr Sparey was pleased to have finished the oilseed rape last Monday (30 July) considering the recent wet weather. “We’ve just been fighting up until now.”

He also had 49ha (120 acres) of Einstein winter wheat which he intended to begin within the next week. He said moisture content varied a lot across the fields. “It’s had enough weather and needs a little sun to even it up.”

• Crop: Oilseed rape
• Variety: Winner
• Moisture content: 6.5-13.5%
• Yield: 2.5t/ha
