Rain holds back harvest in Norfolk
Harvest has only just started again yesterday (Aug 31) after eight days of wet weather for Peter Seaman on Great Farm, Norwich, Norfolk.
He is very pleased with winter wheat, having only finished the first full field yesterday. Claire yielded above average at 11.2t/ha.
But spring barley has been below average, at 5.6t/ha. He said it is a new malting variety called Process, and the entire crop made malting specification at 1.4 – 1.5% nitrogen levels. It was sold on a £90/t contract.
All his barley was sold on contract, with Maris Otter at ÂŁ105/t and Pearl at ÂŁ80/t.
He plans to increase Maris Otter next season and reduce the amount of Pearl. He also plans to grow more oilseed rape as Lioness did very well at 4.6t/ha, he said.
