Rain prevents cutting barley for seed in County Londonderry

Robert Craig of Ballykelly near Limavady, County Londonderry wasn’t combining today due to rain but was hoping to finish his 10ha (26 acres) of Saffron and Camion winter barley for seed by the end of this week.

Since last Monday Mr Craig finished 13ha (31 acres) of Camion yielding 10t/ha (4 t/acre) at 17% moisture and 5ha (12 acres) of Colossus doing 10t/ha (4t/acre) at 18% moisture.

After finishing the winter barley Mr Craig hoped to begin on his 24ha (60 acres) of spring barley. He said it looked quite well and expected yields of 6.25t/ha (2.5t/acre) for 16ha (40 acres) and 5t/ha (2t/acre) for 8ha (20 acres) where leatherjackets had affected crop. He had 8ha (20 acres) of good looking hemp to do as well.

Mr Craig said harvest progress was earlier this year. The current forecast didn’t look good but, “weather permitting, I shall be combining again.”
