Rapeseed disappoints at Manor Farm

Oilseed rape has been very disappointing at Manor Farm, Hemington, Somerset, where James Francis is waiting to start combining wheat.

“It was on some rather thin ground, and it died off quite badly,” he said.

The Cabernet and Eiffel both averaged about 2.5t/ha (1t/acre). “Where it did grow, it was alright – you could see the line where you went onto deeper soil.

“But on the gravel it didn’t have enough cover to keep the weeds down, so when it did rain the weeds made more of it than the rapeseed. It wasn’t very happy at all.”

Mr Francis expected to make a start on Gallant winter wheat as soon as the rain lifted. “I’m looking forward to getting into that; it looks alright.”

But spring barley was still another fortnight away. “It was slow getting away, but it looks nice now – it’s filled out well.”
