Richard’s crops withstand deluge

Richard Solari has recorded 135mm of rain at Heath House Farm, Beckbury, Shrops, in the first 11 days of September, with 60mm falling in 24 hours.

However, his crops were still standing, and despite a bit of sprouting in the wheat, didn’t look too bad.

“If we were lucky enough to get it within the next week it could be alright,” he said.

Yields had phenomenal. “They’re the best crops we’ve ever had.” Oakley had touched 12t/ha (5t/acre) in three fields, and averaged 11t/ha (4.5t/acre) – 2.5t/ha (1t/acre) more than normal.

Einstein had performed less well, and Mr Solari said he would drop it this year.

The Gerald oats were also pleasing, yielding 9t/ha (3.65t/acre) at 12-13% moisture.

Mr Solari now had 24ha (60 acres) of Tipple spring barley and 69ha (170 acres) of wheat to finish off. “We have already combined more tonnes than we ever cut last year, so even if we had to plough the rest of it in we’ve done well.”

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
