Scottish crops ripening too quickly
Robert Ramsey finished cutting winter barley today (July 31) before the rain started in Angus, Scotland. He said Pearl was up to expectations and looked better than the Sequel which had been grown for seed.
Some of the crop had to be put through the dryer, he said.
Oilseed rape harvest was likely to be two or three days away, and the crop was “just ripening off quite nicely”.
“All the other crops are ripening too quickly. The winter wheat is not looking too green, it is very dry and incredibly burnt off in places.”
He expected to start cutting spring barley after oilseed rape, “but some parts of the winter wheat looks like it will be ready before the spring barley”.
