Spreader season is under way with the Amazone ZA-TS 01

With the new ZA-TS 01 model featuring AutoSpread, making its UK debut this spring, we visited J Thomson & Partners to see how they are getting on with their latest fertiliser spreader.

Before upgrading to their ZA-TS 5001, the business had been running a 2016 ZA-TS 4200, which itself had replaced a long-serving ZA-M many years earlier.

When it came time to update, farm owner James was particularly impressed by several of the improvements introduced on the new 01 generation.

One feature that stood out was the new EasyCheck lockers, neatly integrated within the mudguards, which keep the tray testing equipment close to hand and make checking the spread pattern far simpler.

Alongside this, AutoSpread automatically calibrates the spread pattern in situations where the exact fertiliser type cannot be found in the mySpreader app – helping ensure accurate application without time-consuming adjustments.

The upgrade also brought WindControl, which James considered almost essential after encountering challenging conditions in previous seasons when spreading in higher winds.

The benefit has already been clear this year.

“We probably wouldn’t usually have tried spreading today,” explains James, “but with WindControl it gave us peace of mind. It alerted the operator when the wind picked up too much and when it was time to pack up for the day.”

In a season already proving difficult with waterlogged fields and tight weather windows, having that extra confidence has made a real difference.
