James Porter has been busy cutting spring barley at West Scryne, Carnoustie, Angus, over the past few days.

“We’re getting on not too badly and the crops are quite good,” he said.

The 80ha (200 acres) of Appaloosa and Waggon cut for seed so far had averaged over 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), and quality looked good.

“I think the germination should be fine. We’re quite happy with that.” He still had another 53ha (130 acres) to go.

Although Mr Porter had no winter barley or rape, all the crops had been finished in the area, he said.

However, no wheat had yet been started. His Alchemy and Robigus was about a week away from being ripe, with spring barley further inland still two weeks away.

“It wouldn’t take much more rain to start going down,” he said. “But people have got on well for the past two or three days.”
