Sprouted wheat at Mill House Farm

Charles Martin has finished harvest at Mill House Farm, Abbotts Langley, Hertfordshire, but wheat quality suffered after the rain.

“We finished last Wednesday (1 August) but the Einstein had started to sprout, so it’s not going to be milling quality.”

However, wheat cut before the rain should be better, he added. Yields were below the past couple of years, at 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), but probably close to the longer-term average.

Nitouche peas were very poor, having died off in the drought. They yielded just 99t off 34ha (85 acres) – 2.9t/ha (1.2t/acre).

Ovation oilseed rape came in about average, at 3.5t/ha (1.4t/acre).

“Most people are finished around here – there aren’t many standing crops now.”
