Spud expansion for Tesco supplier

TESCO‘S LARGEST fresh potato supplier has bought its Scottish partner for an undisclosed amount.

Lincs-based Branston joined Perth packer WCF Potatoes three years ago.

The firm‘s managing director Graeme Beattie said: “The alliance has been very successful in strengthening our ability to meet Tesco‘s requirements.

“However, we now need to secure the benefits that will come from operating the WCF factory under our own umbrella.

“The new arrangement will be entirely positive for the Abernethy operation and the growers who supply it.”

Branston started supplying Tesco in 1990 and now sells the store 140,000t a year. This is set to increase by another 42,000t following a further consolidation of suppliers announced recently.
