Adrian Ivory is yet to start harvest at Strathisla Farms, Meigle, Perthshire, and is hoping for some good yields.

“From what we’ve seen from the early starters in the area, the samples have shown good yield but poor grain weights,” he said.

“Everything looks okay so far. The forecast is good and we’ll start cutting today (23 July).

“We’ll be starting with the Cyprus winter barley before moving onto Retriever, which we use for our own feed.”

Mr Ivory then expected a break between the end of the winter barley harvest and starting the spring barley, which was split between 265ha of Optic and 100ha of Belgravia.

“We’ll be finishing the winter barley about two weeks earlier than usual, although the spring barley will be roughly in line with other years,” he said.

“We won’t be moving onto the 300ha of winter wheat until September.”

Unfortunately, there was a lot of septoria affecting wheat in the area, said Mr Ivory.

“Everyone around us looks to have suffered to a degree. We seem to have been relatively lucky in comparison to others, but time will tell.”
