Stress builds as crops come together at once – harvest update

He made start on his wheat harvest by cutting 20ha (50 acres) of 2nd wheat Riband last night. He doesn’t know the yield, but expects it to be around the 9.88 t/ha (4 t/acre).

On some contract work Mr Grant-Suttie has done, he had problems with the Optic spring barley as it re-sprouted from weak tillers due to the wet weather in June.

He sprayed the crop with roundup and is now pleased with the results. It‘s got a low nitrogen content and a low number of screenings.

“It‘s been a nightmare but I suppose it renews your determination.

“We thought it would be much worse,” said Mr Grant-Suttie.

He‘s managed to harvest 60 ha (150 acres) out of a total 180ha (450 acres).

He now has the problem that his crops have all come together at the same time, causing him to be very busy, which has been further insinuated by wet weather.

“Everything’s going to hit the wall – If we could just get the wheels turning.”

“We‘ll be doing the wheat between the showers and then when we get a dry spell we’ll try and get the spring barley done – we’re taking each day as it comes.”
