Successful oilseed rape harvest

Phil Downson finished his oilseed rape harvest with success on his farm near Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Yields were averaging around 4.94 t/ha (2 t/acre) from his 16ha (40 acres) of Royal.

“I’m delighted,” he said.

“This was the third year of growing Royal and it’s always averaged about 2 t/acre (4.94 t/ha) – I just stick to what I know.”

Oil content was good at 40% while moisture content was around 11%.

“We haven’t had a bad run – there have been storms about but it’s just a case of dodging them really.”

Mr Downson said that his wheat would need another week of good weather until it’s ready to harvest.
