Tougher line on spud store residues

POTATO GROWERS must prepare for greater residues scrutiny, anti-sprouting product maker Luxan UK has warned.

Proposed EU maximum residue levels (MRL) are unlikely to cause too many problems. But producers must make sure their chlorpropham (CIPC) programmes and store regimes keep residues well below the limit, especially if conditions go against them, said the firm‘s Malcolm Nursey.

“We have had excellent feedback over many years from Gro-Stop, both in the UK and on the continent.”

Growers have found the product‘s low dose programme, designed to minimise residues, keeps tubers in good condition even in long term storage, he explained.

“The new MRL has yet to be set, but most in the industry agree that it will be 10ppm across the whole EU. This should be good news and is a level we can all work to.”

But many buyers are calling for lower or even zero residues, and some member states already have national limits, something growers cannot afford to ignore, he noted.

A limit of 36g/t of CIPC per season has been proposed for ware, and Mr Nursey said all its formulations and application procedures meet this.

Company trials across a range of varieties and storage periods show all recommended Gro-Stop programmes keep residues below 5ppm.

Stick to label recommendations, monitor stock regularly and ensure conditions in store always permit an even spread of active ingredient, urged Mr Nursey.
