Troy salvages last of the wheat
Troy Stuart has finally finished combining at Clyst St Mary, Exeter, Devon, but still has 810ha (2000 acres) of baling and his oilseed rape drilling to do.
“We finished over the weekend (20/21 September) and managed to recover the crop – we haven’t had to abandon any,” he said.
“Bushelweights are pretty dire – in the low 60s kg/hl – and the later yields have been knocked.”
The later wheat averaged 7.5-8t/ha (3-3.2t.acre), but the overall yield was still above average, said Mr Stuart.
“There are still a few people finishing off around here, but a lot has been done over the past week and they will finish this week.”
The straw that was still to be baled had now dried, and ground conditions had improved quickly, he added. “But quality is not going to be good.”
