Troy salvages wheat in Devon
Troy Stuart is combining at every opportunity at Clyst St Mary, Exeter, Devon, salvaging some wheat crops at 34% moisture.
Although most of the wheat was still standing, almost everything had sprouted, he said. He still had 243ha (600 acres) to combine.
“Yields have been reasonable, but quality is rubbish because of the low bushelweights.”
The Solstice, Alchemy, Istabraq and Einstein cut so far had averaged about 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), but with two inches of water in some fields, Mr Stuart was worried about travelling on the land.
“We can’t drill the rape because it’s too wet, and we’re still trying to bale the straw if we can.”
Tipple spring barley had been mixed, ranging from 4.4-5.4t/ha (1.8-2.2t/acre).
