Variable yields for Pearl and Sequel winter barley

With the oilseed rape and winter barley in the barn Robert Ramsey near Arbroath, Angus, had to wait for the spring barley and winter wheat to ripen before getting the combine out again.

“It hasn’t been dry anyway, but I hope to be back on combining this week,” he said. The Pearl and Sequel winter barleys were very variable, with yields ranging from just 1t/ha (0.4t/acre) following a hailstorm to 12t/ha (4.9t/acre).

The Ontario rape came in dry at over 4t/ha (1.6t/acre), leaving 35ha (86 acres) of Oxbridge and Waggon spring barley and 140ha (346 acres) of Alchemy winter wheat to cut.

“The spring barley is not going to be very good but the wheat looks fine,” said Mr Ramsey.
